The body mass index, BMI for short, was invented by Adolphe Quetelet in 1832. Ignaz Kaup developed the BMI further after the World War I.
The BMI serves as a measure for evaluating a person’s body weight in relation to their height.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) later classified the BMI values. Thus, underweight, normal weight and overweight (obesity) indicate BMI values from under 17.5 to 39 and above.
The BMI calculator gives information about your BMI value. Unfortunately, factors such as your metabolism, the mass of your muscles, or the status of your diet are not taken into account.

BMI value & table in combination with gender
In addition to weight and height, gender also plays an important role in the evaluation of your BMI (Body Mass Index). Men usually have a higher percentage of muscle mass than women. This is why there are gender-specific BMI tables, which are not taken into account in the formula or when calculating.
In relation to normal weight, the value for men is between 18.5 and 24.9. For women, it is between 17.5 and 24. The limits are therefore shifted by one unit in the calculator.

BMI Formula – How to calculate BMI
Calculating BMI – Basically, BMI is calculated using a simple formula: BMI = body weight in kilograms (kg) divided by height in metres squared.
The result of the formula shows you whether your weight is in the green zone or whether you are already in the red zone. However, it should be noted that the BMI formula does not take into account the individual composition of body mass consisting of water, fat and muscle tissue.
Nevertheless, the BMI calculator or BMI value can serve as a first, quick guide to classify your body weight in kilograms (kg). Based on your BMI (Body Mass Index), you can set new nutrition and health goals.
Amputation – correction value must be taken into account
This correction value must be taken into account because an amputation changes your weight. Missing body parts must be taken into account in the BMI calculation. The corrected weight must be calculated before the BMI calculation. The BMI formula for the corrected weight is:

In addition to weight, age and gender play an important role in determining BMI. The value categories are somewhat higher for men than for women, because men usually have a higher percentage of muscle mass. Therefore, the BMI normal value for men lies in the interval of 20 to 25 kg/m² and for women in the interval of 19 to 24 kg/m².
In seniors, the BMI value can be somewhat higher. The reason is that small fat reserves can be advantageous in the case of prolonged illness. From the age of 65, a result of up to 29 kg/m² is therefore still a normal value. So with age you are allowed to gain a little weight.
Important: When calculating the BMI for children and adolescents, other guideline values apply, as they are still growing. Therefore, the BMI for children requires its own formula. Children should therefore never be compared or calculated with the BMI for adults. For children, these BMI values are generally only valid as a rough guide. The size and age of children are always different. Growth spurts and therefore height can never be measured correctly.

Overweight according to the BMI table
Basically, being overweight according to the BMI calculator is not the same as being overweight and is by no means synonymous with being unhealthy. Even very fit people with a high percentage of muscle often have a high Body Mass Index. A body fat analysis is more meaningful in such cases. The calculator is therefore not entirely conclusive with the BMI. Nevertheless, a higher BMI can be unhealthy.

If your BMI is classified as obese, we advise you to talk to your doctor or a nutritionist. This will enable you to analyse the nature of your overweight (obesity) correctly. Age is also an important factor. A slight increase in body fat with age is absolutely normal.
The metabolism becomes slower with age and calorie consumption decreases compared to younger people. However, body weight in kilograms (kg) can also decrease with age, as muscle mass is increasingly lost.

BMI – where does it originate?
The Body Mass Index, or BMI for short, is one of the best-known, easiest and quickest ways to estimate your weight in relation to your height. The BMI provides an initial indication of whether you are within the normal range recommended by health authorities.
It was developed in the early 19th century by the Belgian statistician Adolphe Quetelet to calculate general average values for population groups. The term Body Mass Index, which is commonly used today, was coined in the 1970s by the American nutritionist Ancel Keys.
The Body Mass Index has been used as a guideline for healthy body weight by the World Health Organisation (WHO) since the 1980s. The German Nutrition Society and the Austrian Nutrition Society support this.
When is the BMI not meaningful?
The BMI should only be used as a guide to roughly assess whether you are in a healthy nutritional state. The BMI is not very meaningful for the following groups of people:
- Power athletes, endurance athletes & professional athletes.
- Body type is not taken into account
- Body fat distribution is not clearly defined
- Fat mass and water cannot be distinguished
- Body size is not taken into account
- Amputations are not taken into account

The Body Mass Index (BMI calculator) does not provide any information about the distribution of body fat and does not distinguish between fat mass, water and muscle. Therefore, it should not only be related to age and sex. The physique, sports activities and other individual factors should definitely be taken into account.
For example, a strength athlete could get an increased (Body Mass Index) BMI value due to the trained muscle mass. In this case, the BMI calculator can be falsely classified as overweight (obesity, adiposity). The BMI therefore has only limited significance for some groups of people.
