Muesli in general and Bircher muesli in particular are becoming increasingly popular. No wonder, after all, this wholesome meal guarantees a great start to the day. The successful mixture of tasty and digestible convinces the masses and this worldwide.
Healthy, hearty and delicious creation, all this applies to this special Bircher muesli. But who do we actually have to thank for this grandiose muesli invention?
Maximilian Oskar Bircher Benner, the name of the inventive genius who spread the Bircher Muesli more than 150 years ago. The Swiss doctor was certainly interested in healthy nutrition simply because of his profession. But nutritional science also fascinated him throughout his life.
On a hike in his native Switzerland, the doctor was served a muesli mixture that was already very similar to the Bircher Muesli.
His enthusiasm was so great that in 1900 he created his own perfected mixture and thus the famous Bircher muesli. From then on, Dr. Bircher Benner served this healthy breakfast to his patients every day as a healthy dietary dish.
What is so special about Bircher muesli?
Bircher muesli is highly recommended both in terms of taste and as a diet food and is absolutely suitable for daily consumption. Max Bircher Benner must have found the perfect nutrient composition for his muesli creation.
As a healthy breakfast, Bircher provides enough energy for a great start to the day.
How healthy is Bircher Muesli really?
The enormous variety of ingredients makes Bircher muesli a real all-round provider for the body. The apples, for example, provide plenty of vitamins and minerals.
The cereals provide the body with the necessary fibre for healthy digestion. Nuts are full of valuable unsaturated fats.
Due to its high nutritional value, the muesli mixture provides the body with a lot of energy for a long time and, above all, makes you feel full. Thanks to Max Bircher Benner, cravings are a thing of the past.
Bircher Muesli – The Original Recipe According to Bircher Benner
The original Swiss recipe from 1900 contains the following ingredients:
Nowadays, there are many variations on Max Bircher Benner’s basic Bircher Müsli recipe. Everyone can add their own creative ideas as they wish.
Currently, for example, the addition of chia seeds is in. But hazelnuts, almonds or cashews are also popular. Popular fruits include raspberries, physalis, blackberries, blueberries, bananas and grapes.
Instead of water and milk, yoghurt, quark or vegetable milk are also popular. There really are no limits to the creations.
But despite all the experimentation, one thing must be clear: there is definitely no getting around oat flakes as the basis for bircher muesli.
For many people, by the way, it has already become a habit to stock up on muesli so that it is ready to hand every morning for breakfast. By the way, this energy booster can be kept in the fridge for several days.
Bircher Porridge as an innovative creation
The so-called Bircher Porridge variant has also become very popular.
The milk is heated in a pot and the oat flakes are added as soon as the milk begins to simmer. Bring everything to the boil and remove from the heat. Add the grated apple and some cinnamon.
If you like it a little sweeter, you can also stir a little honey into the mixture. Again, you can vary the flavour with fruit, nuts and seeds. Stir all the ingredients together again and the Bircher Porridge is ready.
With a classic Bircher muesli, you can expect about 140 calories per 100 grams. However, the hearty meal may well have more calories depending on the muesli variation.
The more nuts, oat flakes, fruit, etc. spread out in the mixture, the higher the number of calories.
But don’t worry: because of the wholesome ingredients, the protein content, for example, is also relatively high, which in turn ultimately helps build muscle. So after the power breakfast, you can start right away full of energy.
