In recent years, they have probably become one of the most important components of the breakfast menu. They are delicious, healthy and easy to process. We are talking about nuts. There are several different types of nuts – you will never get bored, as there is a wide selection to choose from.
Especially for breakfast nuts are enjoying increasing popularity. Due to the many advantages of eating nuts, more and more people are buying nuts. Which nuts are available in Austria and Germany? Which types of nuts are there at all? And which ones are healthy? We will get to the bottom of all these questions in today’s blog post.
Which type of nuts are available in Austria and Germany?
This question is not easy to answer. Nuts are rather scarce in these countries. This is due to many circumstances: for one thing, domestic production is not large enough to supply all of Austria or Germany. Secondly, for many nut varieties the climatic conditions in both countries are not particularly good. In Austria, however, there is one nut variety in particular: the walnut. It is one of the healthiest nut varieties. Walnuts are especially good for your brain. Although production has increased in recent years, it is unfortunately not enough to feed a whole country.
Austria currently produces 4663 tonnes of shelled walnuts per year. But up to 45,906 tons are imported – the per capita consumption in Austria is titled 4.3 kg per year. One can clearly see here how much is missing. Although Austria produces more and more each year, there is still a long way to go before imports can be avoided.
Now we have heard that walnuts are produced in Austria and Germany. Almost every other variety needs to be imported. It’s not quite true that there are only walnuts in these latitudes – but the walnut is the only variety that is produced in significant quantities. Almonds and hazelnuts exist but are usually not available on the market. You have to go directly to the farm to buy nuts. Hazelnuts are our secret tip! They are usually so good that they are reserved months in advance.
What types of nuts are actually available?
The question of the different nut varieties must be answered comprehensively. There are many different types of nuts, each with its own tastes and advantages. Here is a small list of them:
- Cashews (Alarm Superfood!)
- Brazil nuts
We have already explained the last one in more detail for you. The other varieties, except for the chestnuts, are all imported. The chestnut is very popular in Austria and Germany – it is best enjoyed in autumn. Concerning the other types of nuts, you should definitely pay attention to which ones you buy. The countries of origin often vary here. Hazelnuts often come from Turkey – but also from Italy or Spain. With almonds, you have to be prepared for a few more kilometres: these are usually from California or China. A hot tip is always to pay attention to the country of origin and buy organic if possible. This way the nuts are more expensive, but you can be sure that they are of good quality. We also pay attention to the best quality of the ingredients in the creation of our mueslis, crunchies and porridges – and therefore also to our nuts.
Which nuts should one eat?
This question is probably a very subjective one. Which nuts do you like best? However, it is also important to consider how much of a burden you put on the environment with your purchase. If nuts have to travel many kilometres to be served on our tables, this can have a major impact on the climate. You should also definitely look out for the organic label. In general, the rule for us would be: It would be better to buy nuts less – but if you do buy them, it should be in a sustainable way.
Which nuts are healthy?
This question can also be answered very easily. The majority of nuts are very healthy. For a long time, nuts were considered a calorie bomb – but this misconception has long been refuted. It is true that nuts have a high fat and calorie content. However, this does not mean that they are necessarily unhealthy. The human body cannot process all the calories it gets from nuts. Therefore, the fat is not completely absorbed and does not pay so much into our calorie account.
But nuts are not only rich in healthy fats. They contain many nutrients – they are even considered a nutrient bomb! You don’t have to eat many of them to get full. Walnuts, for example, provide the best proportion of omega-3 fatty acids. Magnesium and folic acid are also abundant in nuts. Nuts can also be used to fight high cholesterol – or can lower the risk of diabetes. They are very valuable for the brain.
How can I best incorporate nuts into my diet?
Nuts are therefore very healthy in many ways. The question of how to embed them correctly in our diet is easy for us to answer. Whether as a snack in between meals or as a topping on porridge or yoghurt – there are countless ways to integrate nuts into your diet. So, a porridge with almond slices or a muesli with hazelnuts will help you get a healthy start to the day. And if you want it more experimental, you can try these delicious nut energy balls:
- Food processor
Toppings (if desired):
- Grained nuts
- Coconut flakes
- Poppy seeds
- If you have non-pitted dates, pit them first and then put them in your food processor.
- Next, add all the other ingredients and mix well until you have a sticky mixture.
- Then form small balls.
- If you like, you can also roll the balls in grated nuts, coconut flakes or poppy seeds.
- You can enjoy the balls immediately or store them in the refrigerator.
