Of course, every child would love greasy sweet nut nougat cream, sticky cornflakes and sugared strawberries for breakfast.
And admittedly: When things have to go fast in the morning and there is no time to eat together in peace, buttered toast with sugary jam is a temptingly quick solution.
However, carbohydrates and fat alone are not enough to get a child through the day and, in large quantities, are even rather harmful in the long run.

What does a low-sugar diet mean for children?
To promote growth, children need sufficient nutrients, vitamins, minerals and trace elements.
Since sweet and fatty foods fill you up quickly, they seem to give a quick energy boost at first, but turn out to be rather nutrient-poor in retrospect.
For children who want to play in a good mood at kindergarten or who need to concentrate at school, a long-term balanced diet with lots of nutrients and immune-boosting vitamins is much healthier.
Sugar-free whole grain products, lots of fruit and vegetables, animal protein and sufficient fluids are essential and should be available in sufficient quantities. As is often the case, children learn behavioural patterns from adults:

What does too much sugar do?
We learn from our mother’s milk that sweets taste good. But sugar is addictive – even in adults, because it activates the same area of the brain as drugs do.
It is particularly fatal if children regularly consume sugar in their first years of life, because this is when their sense of taste is formed and they get used to the idea that everything has to taste sweet.
Too much sugar consumption can quickly lead to children building up more body fat and becoming overweight. This has long-term health consequences such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes.
In addition, too much sugar upsets digestion and intestinal flora, which leads to bloating and can weaken the immune system.
Many packaged foods that we find in the supermarket contain industrially produced sugar that is used as a sweetener or flavour enhancer.
However, there are sugars that are already naturally present in many of our foods, such as lactose in dairy products or fructose in fruit.
This amount of natural carbohydrates already covers our daily energy needs in a balanced diet, so additional sugar is not needed and may even harm us in the long run. Therefore, it is better to resort to foods without added sugar.
Breakfast without sugar for children – ideas
To ensure that children start the day well fortified and do not become unfocused, listless and crotchety later on, it is important to offer them a balanced breakfast – this is also possible without added sugar. To ensure that they have enough energy for the day, you should pay attention to these four important ingredients:
- Breakfast should contain enough liquid: A warm herbal or fruit tea stimulates the circulation, a juice spritzer provides vitamins and strengthens the immune system.The tea can be sweetened with a little honey. For the juice spritzer, we recommend home-pressed orange juice or a fruit juice, as these are sugar-free. Fruit nectar, on the other hand, contains added sugar.
- Carbohydrates for sufficient energy: Wholemeal products such as a fortifying wholemeal bread, muesli with oat flakes or one of our delicious porridges made from oats provide long-lasting satiety through natural carbohydrates.
- Vitamins in the form of fruit or vegetables: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, as the saying goes. An apple, a banana or some cucumber and peppers for those who prefer a spicy breakfast strengthen the immune system with their vitamins and provide important fibre for digestion.
- Dairy products for sufficient animal protein: Animal protein is particularly important for the brain and body during the growth phase. That’s why a glass of milk, some yoghurt or cheese for breakfast supports children’s development in the long term.

Bread with mashed banana
A slice of wholemeal bread is the basis for this delicious breakfast that almost every child will enjoy. This is spread with a little butter – because a little fat is needed by the body to process vitamins better. Now a banana is cut into thin slices, placed on the bread and mashed a little.
A glass of milk and a warm tea make this fruity bread a wholesome breakfast in no time. Sugar-free pancakes for breakfast
Pancakes are super delicious and can easily be varied individually. With flour, eggs, baking powder and milk, they can be prepared within a few minutes. To give them a little sweetness, you can add a banana instead of sugar and a little less milk or a little honey to the batter instead.
For extra nutritious pancakes, replace some of the flour with Verival organic oat or spelt flakes. Fresh pancakes go well with fresh yoghurt or quark, a little honey spread on top or a fruit puree you have pureed yourself.
