The original Bircher muesli recipeFebruary 24, 2020
The original Bircher Muesli – an old classic that should not be missed on the breakfast table! The muesli lovers among you know what we mean. The Bircher muesli is not only extremely healthy, but also super delicious. It is very easy to prepare, and you will certainly succeed even if you are not a professional chef. We prefer to start making Bircher muesli the day before.
The first step is to let the oat flakes soak in water. Put the oats in a bowl and add cold water until the flakes are completely covered. Then put the mixture in the fridge. Now it’s time to sleep on it for one night 😉
For our Bircher muesli recipe we prefer to use crisp oat flakes. They are still a little crunchy even after soaking for a longer period. If you like your breakfast mushy, use fine oat flakes or small flakes.
In the morning, take the soaked oat flakes out of the fridge and add the milk first. Some muesli fans also swear by a spoon of yoghurt in Bircher muesli. This gives the muesli a fresh and slightly sour note. For a vegan version you can also use plant-based drinks such as almond drink, rice drink or soy drink.
Finally, all you have to do is grate the apples and stir them in with the hazelnuts. In the original Bircher muesli recipe the whole apple – i.e. with seeds and core – is grated. However, we can understand if you prefer to leave out the kernels. The skin on the other hand is important, as it contains the most vitamins.
You can also try the Bircher muesli with different toppings. You can choose wonderfully between different flavours here. Fresh fruit are especially tasty in combination with the Bircher muesli. But you can also take your Bircher muesli to the next level with warm compote, dried fruit, seeds and spices such as cinnamon and garnish it beautifully. After all, as we all know, the food should be a feast for the eyes, too.
Incidentally, the original Bircher muesli was discovered by the Swiss doctor Maximilian Oskar Bircher-Benner during a hike at the beginning of the 19th century. He then made it into a healthy dietary food for his patients and up to this day it is still a popular breakfast dish all over the world.
