“One person can change a lot”: Earthtalks for Breakfast
On occasion of the 9thEarthtalks, people over at Neongreen Network sent out an invitation to come and have breakfast with famous documentary filmmaker and ocean researcher Céline Cousteau, design-guru and author John Thackara, Matthias Reisinger from Impact HUB Vienna and Earthtalkes co-founder Angie Rattay. The whole morning was characterized by one of the main ideas behind the Earthalkes series: One person can change a lot.
Angie Rattay is the perfect example for how the idea of an individual can be transformed into a large movement. Even when she was still studying at university, she always wanted to make a positive change using her skills as a graphic designer. The result? Not only a complete manual on how to use our planet earth, which she included in her thesis at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, but also an association, supported by the Neongreen Network, that promotes better networking of eco-social initiatives. To top it all off, the Earthtalkes event series was founded, which attracted a whopping 1.000 like-minded people this year.
“What would have happened, if Mahatma Gandhi had thought “one alone can’t change anything”?” Angie Rattay
Matthias Reisinger is one of the founders of Impact HUB Vienna, a co-working and co-creating space for everyone who wants to create sustainable change by coming up with creative solutions. According to him, experiments in a small group are the perfect way to truly make an impact. Instead of pointing the finger at habits that have a detrimental effect on our environment, Matthias’ advice is to motivate people and show them alternative ways.
“Find your passion and figure out how you can have a positive impact using it.” Matthias Reisinger
Céline Cousteau and John Thackara agree that if you want to make a change you need to raise awareness first. Within the food sector, in particular, it would be a very important step towards more sustainability to establish a direct contact between farmers, producers and consumers. All of the speakers seemed to think that experience is more crucial than words and ideas. Film maker Céline Cousteau would like to see more films that create a true desire to go out and experience nature. Because only he who experiences nature with all of his senses will realise just how important it is to protect it.
“If we don’t touch the soil, we start disconnecting.” Céline Cousteau
