A mindful morning with nutritionist Patricia Görgl
Every morning is a new beginning, a new chance with countless opportunities! The early hours of the day are the subject of great many proverbs and quotes. But what is it, that makes the morning so special? Or better, how can we use the morning to gain momentum for the rest of the day and live through it energized and full of joy?
The key is: routine! A well planed morning routine is powerful, stimulating and helps us connect with ourselves. It’s time to ditch the usual mornings, where we start our day by hitting the snooze button and checking social media. There’s so much more we can do!
There are endless possibilities to start your day. The most important things is to find something that works for you! And remember: no stress! There’s no need to meditate, whilst brushing your teeth, doing a handstand and preparing your breakfast – all at the same time. Instead, find one thing that you would like to change or add to your morning and try to make it a habit. Little steps can go a long way!
Here are some ideas that might inspire you:
1.) Getting up early
A great number of the most successful people in the world have one thing in common: they all get up early. They take the saying “the early bird catches the worm” literally. If you struggle getting out of bed in the morning, try to start with little steps, setting your alarm 10min earlier than the day before. Make the most of the extra time by practicing a few yoga exercises, taking time to have breakfast or reading a book.
2.) Meditation
Meditation is as old as humanity itself but still it’s a skill that many people first need to learn. The latin origin of the word signifies as much as reflecting, pondering over something or giving something a serious thought. The length and kind of meditation is really up to personal preference. Some people just like to focus on their breathing for a few minutes, others like to us special meditation apps, that guide them through a meditation session. Try different styles and find out what suits your needs best!
3.) Gratitude
It’s not happiness that makes you grateful – it’s gratitude that makes you happy! Try to take this quote literally by noting down three things that you are thankful for in a journal or a piece of paper. It can really be anything: from being grateful for your friends and family to the breakfast that awaits you. Try it for yourself and experience how gratitude will turn into happiness. As my next-door neighbor always likes to say: By being grateful you simply don’t leave any room for the bad in your life.
4.) Offline
New followers? An email from work or a new like on your holiday pictures? There is so much that can distract us throughout the day. Why not try to use your morning routine as a kind of daily digital detox and keep away as long as possible from your phone, laptop and social media? Try to make the most of your time by really focusing on yourself, be mindful and enjoy every minute of your morning routine, instead of having to rush through it because you got lost in your Instagram feed.
5.) Last but not least: “You gotta nourish to flourish” – Breakfast
Charge your batteries and start well nourished into the day with a healthy breakfast. Be creative and try to bring as much diversity on your breakfast table as possible. There’re countless studies that prove the importance of breakfast. Many have shown, that people who eat breakfast have a better concentration span in the morning, that they feel healthier and more vital than people who don’t eat breakfast and have less struggles to keep their weight.
From my experience as a nutritionist I would recommend to try and mix complex carbohydrates, proteins and high quality fats for a well balanced breakfast.
Tip: Before having breakfast, I would suggest to drink a glass of warm water! In the ayurvedic medicine drinking warm water first thing in the morning is viewed as a kind of shower for the inside of your body, helping to get rid of metabolism toxins and your cardiovascular system up and running.
In this fast paced world we live in, it’s more important than ever to find calmness and rest in our hectic everyday lives. Discovering the best personal morning routine for you is a journey not a sprint, so allow yourself to experiment and try new things, that will help you create rituals according to your needs. Don’t look at it as another thing on your to do list, but instead, view it as an opportunity to get to know yourself. Be creative and find your own best way!
