In our “Good Morning from … “series, we present you our favourite breakfast spots from all around the world. This way, you are perfectly prepared for your next trip. Today, we would like to introduce you to our favourite breakfast in spots in Vienna.
Vienna, the capital city of Austria, lays directly besides the Danube. The artistic and intellectual heritage is imprinted by famous inhabitants such as Mozart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud. Vienna is well known for its imperial palaces such as Schönbrunn Palace and the summer residence of the Habsburgs. In the historical and modern buildings of MuseumsQuartier you can visit artworks created by the famous Egon Schiele or Gustav Klimt.
For our colleague, a born Viennese, there is nothing better than strolling through the Old Town of Vienna in the morning, while sipping on a cup of coffee and looking forward to having her breakfast.
Vienna has a lot to offer when it comes to breakfast spots such as different cafés and restaurants. Now, we would like to introduce to you the first part of our favourite Viennese breakfast spots:
Motto am Fluss
The Motto am Fluss is located directly besides the Danube Canal, in the centre of Vienna. The building is also the landing stage of the Twin City Liner, the ship connection between Vienna and Bratislava in Slovakia. The Motto am Fluss can be reached in just a few minutes from the underground station Schwedenplatz. The picture below shows the café with the sun terrace on the upper deck. The café focuses on preparing food freshly and using regional and organic ingredients. Especially the breakfast highlights stand out on the menu. Smoothies, homemade lemonades and homemade bread are offered at the Motto am Fluss.
In the Tastery in the 7th district you can try various new products – free of charge. You can discover food and drinks, taste them and take them with you straight away. If you are looking for something new, special and innovative, you will definitely find something there. The Tastery changes its product range every month – you can find anything from exquisite gin brands, exotic insects and delicacies to vegan rarities.
Since July 2019 the Tastery is offering breakfast as well. You will definitely find something for you as the Tastery offers a lot of different options, for example the classic savoury “Tasty Tastery Breakfast” and the vegan and gluten-free chocolate-banana porridge from Verival with pomegranate seeds and date syrup. Moreover, you can try the “Wachauer Special” with real apricot jam from the region “Wachau” and Wiener Kipferl or the “Chive Special” with egg in a jar and farmer’s bread with chives.
“There was a café here 90 years ago. It was called Edison. We only have one picture of it. And the joy in the face of a pedestrian when we told him that a new Café Edison is being built here. He still remembers the old one now…” This is how the charming Edison restaurant in the 8th district of Vienna presents itself on its website. The Edison is located near the old hospital “Altes AKH” and the University of Vienna. It offers a super delicious brunch on Sundays (attention: in July & August the brunch is on summer break). Breakfast à la carte is always available, on Sundays from 9 am.
“What was wrong with them when they called a new, neatly cobbled together place Spelunke? The devil? The Danube Canal God? Or just a dirty fantasy?” – With these words, found on the homepage, the Spelunke introduces itself. They don’t exactly know why it was named Spelunke, as the restaurant by the Vienna Danube Canal is anything but- The definition of a “Spelunke” is a “poorly maintained, infamous restaurant”. The place stands out through its casual furnishings and decoration, unusual paintings, atmospheric lighting and an extraordinarily cosy ambience. Every corner of this restaurant offers something new to discover.
The breakfast menu invites you to a “portion of excess and dissipation”: From deliciously crispy oven-baked breads to exotic dishes from all over the world and hangover breakfasts. On the weekend you can enjoy breakfast until 4 pm. The Spelunke is definitely worth a visit for us!
