10 Good Reasons for Choosing Organic MilkJune 1, 2018
For our organic mueslis we exclusively use certified organic ingredients, carefully sourced from a group of farmers we’ve known for many years. With our purchasing decisions we want to support the adoption of organic farming practices across Europe and beyond the borders. Hence, it seems only logical to care about the organic quality of the dairy that are enjoyed together with our mueslis, granolas and porridges, as well.
Together with dietician and health scientist Angelika Kirchmaier we used the international milk day, which takes place annually on June 1st, as an opportunity to put together 10 reasons for choosing organic milk over conventional milk. Angelika operates a practice for nutritional therapy in Tyrol and – amongst other things – teaches at various universities. As a trained chef – apart from the nutritional aspect – also taste and enjoyment matter a lot to her, which can be read and heard in her numerous books as well as on the local radio station in Tyrol (ORF Tirol), where Angelika has been giving dietary and cooking tips on a weekly basis for the last 15 years.
10 Good Reasons for Choosing Organic Milk over Conventional Milk
#1 Humane Husbandry:
Organic guidelines prescribe a specifically ethical and humane husbandry with regular access to pasture and/or open air. Organic farmers therefore make sure to provide their animals with sufficient space as well as contact with their conspecifics. After all, healthy, happy cows are the basis for high-quality milk.
#2 Guaranteed No Genetic Modification:
Organic milk is assuredly free from genetic modification, which applies to all further processed organic dairy, like yoghurt, curd or cheese, as well.
#3 High-Quality Feed:
The feed plays a huge role for the quality and the healthiness of the milk. The lower the share of, e.g. concentrated feed, the higher the share of healthy ingredients.
#4 Protein & Calicium Supplier:
Organic milk is not only a good source for calcium (one glass contains approximately 300 mg), but contains all essential amino acids as well. Our body needs these nutrients for transport processes and the immune system.
#5 Reduced Risk:
Due to the ethical husbandry and the high-quality feed, cows from organic farms are in the best of health. The excessive use of medication is therefore unnecessary. Apart from vaccinations, organic farmers are not allowed to use any preventive medication, which is why it is rather unlikely for consumers to be infected with multi-resistant germs by consuming an organic milk product.
#6 Lots of Omega 3 Fatty Acids:
Omega 3 fatty acids have many positive properties which allow them, for example, to prevent inflammation in the body. More green fodder means more valuable omega 3 fatty acids, which is why organic milk and further processed organic dairy contain a high share of omega 3 fatty acids that have a positive influence on the vessels.
#7 High Share of Beta-Carotene:
Organic milk contains a particularly high share of beta-carotene, which is a precursor of vitamine A. In the body, beta-carotene unfolds antioxidant properties, which means that it intercepts free radicals and can prevent, for example, cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
#8 Good Source of Unsaturated Fatty Acids:
The higher the share of saturated fatty acids in your diet, the more unfavourable are the effects on the body. The higher the share of unsaturated fatty acids, the healthier. Organic products provide a high share of healthy unsaturated fatty acids.
#9 A Naturally Incomparable Flavour:
Organic dairy contain a multitude of different aroma components. Therefore, their taste is more intense than of conventional dairy. That’s a difference you can taste at the first sip or spoon.
#10 Trust is Good, Control is Better:
Organic products are strictly and regularly controlled to make sure that where products that are declared as organic on the outside are organic on the inside as well.
So, as you can see, choosing an organic milk product for your organic muesli, granola or porridge is definitely worthwhile.
